There are a lot of different dogs, so there is also a need for a lot of different types of dog food. We are talking about the different types of food that are available for different stages of the dog’s life, but also, for example, about the composition of the food.
For example, you have the well-known dog food , but also wet food and raw meat are different types of food that is given to the dog. The different types of food all have their advantages and disadvantages and in this text we will take a look at the different types of dog food and what the advantages and disadvantages of this food.
Phase of life of the dog
First of all, there are different types of food that are categorized according to the different stages of the dog’s life. Starting with the puppy. When a puppy is born, he drinks milk from the mother dog for as long as he needs it. When switching to food, it is important that the puppy is fed puppy food. This has to do with the composition of the chunks. A puppy must of course still grow and therefore needs more protein and calories in his food. This is in puppy food so that the dog also gets enough of these nutrients.
For older dogs there is also a special type of food that is recommended. When a dog gets older, there is a risk that the dog will gain weight. That’s because the dog moves less. Senior dog food often contains fewer calories and fats, so that the dog still gets enough food, but does not gain weight. Also, senior food is often added various good nutrients and vitamins that the older dog can use well. Despite the fact that different phases of life can also take different food, there is still a difference between the shape of the food that the dogs can get.
Different types of food
With the different forms of dog food, we will mainly look at the different structures. The first, and most famous, are the chunks.
Dry food / chunks
Chunks are nutrients that are compressed into a compact chunk. The nutrients often consist of different types of meat, vegetables and grains. The grains are needed to make the chunk. This makes the chunks dry, which is an immediate disadvantage of the chunks. This means that the dog needs more moisture than other types of food. The advantage of chunks is that they are often a lot cheaper than other types of feed. The food is also easy to digest for the dogs and therefore also suitable for active dogs.
Wet food / canned food
Another well-known form of dog food is net food. You often find this in a tin. Canned food is food to which a lot of moisture is added. The food often consists of different types of meat, vegetables and grains. Because the food contains a lot of moisture, the dog often has to eat more than when he eats other food.
When the dog does not eat enough of the wet food, there is a chance that he will not get enough nutrients. Net food is a good solution for dogs with dental problems. As a result, they do not have to chew hard chunks. A combination of wet food and dry food is also sometimes given. Not all dogs love just kibble, but sometimes this can be solved very simply by adding a little bit of soft food to the hard kibble.
A third option is frozen food. This is a type of food that has not been known for a long time, but is increasingly used. Frozen food mainly consists of meat and therefore has fewer additives than other types of feed. The quality of the feed is often much higher. Frozen food, as the name suggests, is stored in the freezer.
This is because the food outside the freezer remains good for a few days. If you do not have a lot of space in the freezer, this can, of course, mean that frozen food is not useful in that respect. It can also take some time to adjust to this type of food because you do not want to throw too much or thaw too little for the dog.
Which kind should I choose?
Ultimately, it is especially important that the dog gets enough nutrients but also likes the food. This can take time to find a joint solution that is appropriate for both you and the dog. It is not possible for everyone to buy the most expensive food available, which is why it is important to research which food is best for the dog.
You can also consult with the vet if you are unsure whether the food you buy for the dog is good enough. It is important to remember that the dog needs a number of nutrients in his diet: carbohydrates, vitamins, proteins, minerals, good fats, and water. It is also important that the dog likes the food. If the dog still does not take good food, this is of course also harmful to his health. So it is a question of a good balance.
